Somikazi Bonani, a librarian at Grosvenor, said that the library accommodated around 25 children for the event.

“These initiatives are crucial in South Africa where we have a problem of children who cannot read with meaning. As libraries we are here to promote the culture of reading,” said Bonani.
The event featured energetic readings by Charles and Alta Haffner, local narrators who captivated the children with Teddy Crumpet and the Lost Star by Jesse Drayton. Bonani also read Nal’ibali by Baeletsi Tsatsi, entertaining and keeping the young audience spellbound.

Later, the children were treated to sweets and fruit, making the day even more special.
World Read Aloud Day is a powerful reminder of the influence reading has on children’s minds. Grosvenor Library’s undertaking is a demonstration of its ongoing commitment to literacy and developing an appreciation of books in the community.
