Community comes together to help The Bluff youth fighting cancer

The Bluff community rallied together at a bingo day in order to raise funds for Caitlyn Micholson’s fight against cancer.

THE Bluff community came out in force to support 24-year-old Caitlyn Micholson with a bingo fundraiser night at Wentworth Bowling Club on February 2. Organised by Bonita Buitendag, the fundraiser aimed to help Micholson with her ongoing battle against stage 4 metastatic melanoma. Donations far exceeded the expectations with the night deemed a resounding success.

Buitendag organised the event setup, while Debbie Peters and Sandra Greyling were the bingo masters for the day.

Due to an avalanche of sponsorship and player support, the fundraiser exceeded its initial target of R6000 by a whopping R10 471. This helps greatly in raising the much-needed funds for Micholson’s immunotherapy treatment.

Micholson’s mother, Tamarin Nieuwoudt, was extremely thankful. “We are so overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the community. So very thankful. They have no idea how much this has helped us,” said Nieuwoudt.

“We had hoped for about 60 people originally, but when we counted, we had just over 118 people come in. The atmosphere of the day was absolutely phenomenal, everyone opened their hearts to the fundraiser, and all had fun despite the incredible heat. The laughing, giggling and tears filled the room, making this fundraiser the best we have ever had,” Buitendag said.

A range of prizes, vouchers and hampers were contributed by local companies and individuals. These items included cupcakes, hair and beauty vouchers, food vouchers, uShaka Marine combo vouchers, a collection of ceramic pots and a hamper of pampering goodies.

Buitendag expressed thanks to Heaven in a Box Bakery, Cherry Blossom Bakery, Lauren C, Chanel’s Hair @ Home, Lords and Legends Bluff, GTC Automotive Repairs, Shimmy Chic Nails, Seeds 4 Sol, Freda’s Pots, Wentworth Bowling Club, and Fynnlands Sports Club.

This fundraiser is a testimony to the power of community and the indomitable spirit of The Bluff to come through in times of need.
