Tamarin Nieuwoudt, Caitie’s mother, recalled the heartbreaking moment when Caitie took her last breath.

“She woke up and started battling to breathe, we kept an eye on her and I noticed her breaths were becoming shorter and fewer, so we sat with her and told her how much we loved her, and she went peacefully. I think her body just had enough, I asked God that morning in the shower that if it was his will to take her, to please take her quickly because she was in so much pain,” she said.

Caitie’s family is coming together to honour the vibrant, kind young woman whose life touched so many. Tamarin expressed gratitude to The Bluff community for its tremendous support in the way of fundraisers, raffles, and awareness campaigns to help Caitie cover her medical expenses.

“I am still in awe with the community and everything they have done. We as a family decided to donate some of the money raised to charities in her honour,” she said.

Caitie was known for her kind heart and selfless nature. She adored animals, especially her beloved cats, had a passion for cooking, reading, and the outdoors. She was a former Scouts member and found joy in simple pleasures like sunflowers, the colour blue and the city of Paris. She was also a big pottered (a fan of the Harry Potter movies).

Through her battle, she remained resilient, surrounded by unwavering support from her family, friends, and community.

Lisa Micholson, Caitie’s aunt, shared on Facebook the impact Caitie’s life had on everyone.

“You touched the hearts of every single person you knew, in more ways than you know Pooh Bear (Caitie). Rest easy knowing that we will see you again in heaven. Keep all those other angels up there on their toes with your quirky little ways and whimsical personality. You made everyone around you feel happy and always managed to make them smile,” said Lisa.

She was resilient throughout her battle, sustained by unyielding love from her family, friends, and community.

Funeral details

The service for Caitie will take place on March 5 at Stellawood Chapel, Berea, at 10:00. The service will be live streamed from Elite Cremations Facebook page.

While Caitie’s loved ones get ready to say their last goodbye, they take comfort in the fact that her kindness, strength and beautiful spirit will live on through their hearts and in charitable donations made in her name.
