ETHEKWINI residents need to brace themselves for what could be another day of wet and rainy conditions as the South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a level 2 weather warning for disruptive rain which is expected to hit parts of KZN, including eThekwini, from midnight tomorrow, March 13, until March 14.

SAWS said that isolated to widespread thundershowers and showers are expected, leading to localised flooding and damage to infrastructure. Models currently indicate that the eastern parts of the province will be worst hit, with heavy rainfall increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
Risks of heavy rain:
SAWS has identified the following likely risks of the heavy rain:
- Localised floods of roads, settlements, bridges, and rivers.
- Damage to mud houses and other poor structures.
- Dangerous road conditions due to water-logged roads and potholes.
- The probability of sinkholes in affected areas.
Precautions to take
- Avoid travelling on roads and bridges in low-lying areas.
- Stay indoors and away from windows during storms.
- Shelter pets and cover vehicles to prevent hail damage.
- Move livestock and vehicles to safe, sheltered locations.
- Refrain from outdoor activities.
- Unplug electrical devices to avoid damage from power surges.
- Keep emergency numbers on hand for immediate assistance.
The eThekwini Municipality has assured that emergency and disaster management teams are on standby and are constantly following weather updates. Residents are requested to stay indoors where possible and only move when absolutely necessary.
The public is asked to stay informed on weather alerts, as the SAWS may revisit the warning today (March 12), if the weather improves.
