Help Happie Hippie restore people’s lives with bag of dignity

Happie Hippie hopes to transform the lives of individuals suffering with addictions, homelessness and unemployment.

HAPPIE Hippie, a non-profit organisation founded on The Bluff, is making a significant difference by changing the lives of homeless individuals suffering with addiction and those who are unemployed. Founded in January 2022 by Andy Ward, the non-profit body is driven by compassion and commitment to rehabilitation and rebirth.

Ward was driven to develop Happie Hippie upon witnessing the lives of street dwellers struggling with addiction and hopelessness. He sought a solution that did not just provide immediate relief but also long-term rehabilitation.

“We want people to realise their potential, rebuild their lives, and, in turn, help others do the same,” said Ward.

The Bag of Dignity:

One of Happie Hippie’s flagship endeavours is the “Bag of Dignity”, which works to provide essential items to those in need. The programme operates on a buy-one-give-one model which means if someone purchases a bag with us, that bag will be donated to someone in need.

Each bag has essential items:

  • A toothbrush.
  • Toothpaste.
  • Energy bar.
  • Facecloth.
  • Soap.

The strong, waterproof bags are made out of reused gazebo roof material, making sure the organisation lives up to their green slogan.

Sales of these bags in bulk helps raise money for Happie Hippie’s rehabilitation sponsorship programme. Ward said Happie Hippie sponsors addicts who cannot afford it, covering their R2 500 monthly rehab fees for six months.

Beyond the material aid, Happie Hippie believes in human connection. The workers listen to the stories of individuals they help, and in doing so, hope and trust are built.

“The greatest thing that you can give is love and time. Love, rooted in faith, changes,” said Ward.

Happie Hippie survives on the donations of the community to continue its mission. Donations of toiletries, clothing and shoes are always appreciated, as are financial donations to sponsor rehabilitation. The organisation also has a long-term vision of opening a halfway house to assist those transitioning from rehab into employment.

By supporting Happie Hippie, you are assisting in restoring hope and dignity. Whether you purchase a Bag of Dignity, donate or spread awareness, every act contributes towards transforming lives.
