A Level 5 weather warning for significant rainfall accumulation remains in effect for the following districts:

  • eThekwini,
  • iLembe,
  • uMgungundlovu,
  • Ugu,
  • Harry Gwala

The Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has assured residents that disaster management teams will continue to be on alert and monitor the weather conditions.

The ongoing rainfall continues to pose a risk of the following impacts:

  • Further flooding of roads and settlements.
  • Increased risk of damage to bridges.
  • Continued potential for displacement of communities.
  • Persistent danger to life due to fast-flowing, deep water.
  • Prolonged disruption to traffic flow due to road flooding or closures.
  • Ongoing disruption to essential services, including water and electricity.

Cogta advised residents in the affected areas to maintain a state of vigilance and continue to adhere to the following precautions:

  • Remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel on roads whenever possible
  • Avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams, especially where water levels are above ankle height.
  • If your vehicle becomes trapped in floodwaters, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground.
  • Ensure that valuable items within buildings are moved to a safe place above anticipated flood levels.
  • In rural areas relocate animals to higher ground.
  • Exercise extreme caution when travelling, and avoid travel if possible, as roads may be flooded and potholes obscured by water.

The public is urged to stay informed about weather updates and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities and emergency services.
