Man fined R10 000 for false hijacking report

Sergeant Bhekumuzi Dlamini said the suspect told the police that he was driving near Lamontville on the day of the alleged incident.

A MAN who falsely reported a hijacking at the Montclair police station has been fined R10 000 or six months in jail for defeating the ends of justice.
Mpendulo Mlonyeni (25) appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court on June 11 following a lengthy investigation by the detectives that revealed that he fabricated a story of being hijacked.

According to Sergeant Bhekumuzi Dlamini of Montclair police station, the man told the police at the time that he was driving near Lamontville when unknown armed men blocked his vehicle, forced him to get off, and took his cellphones before they fled in his car.

“He reported the incident at Montclair police station, however, shortly after the matter was reported, an informant told the police that Mlonyeni was never hijacked. Police continued with the investigation, and discovered that Mlonyeni and his friends robbed a school from Umkomaas, and stole undisclosed number of computers,” said Dlamini.
The suspects fled the scene to join the N2 towards Amanzimtoti. The incident was reported to the police, and circulated on radio.

“When they approached Galleria Mall at around 04:00 in December last year, they spotted police vehicles positioned in all directions. They abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot. Upon searching the vehicle which belongs to Mlonyeni, police found stolen computers. The vehicle was impounded and sent to Amanzimtoti police station,” said Dlamini.

In court he was sentenced to a fine of R10 000 or six months jail time. Dlamini warned the public about the seriousness of falsely reporting a fabricated incident to the police.
He said such acts lead to prosecution and a jail sentence.
