Two men appear in court for alleged bush knife attack

Sipho Dube and Khaya Mamba were arrested and appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court for attempted murder.

TWO men appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on September 10, facing charges of attempted murder following an alleged bush knife attack on a security guard in Clairwood earlier this month.

Sipho Dube and Khaya Mamba were arrested after an incident that reportedly began at a tavern in Clairwood on August 6. According to sources, the pair had an altercation with another individual at the tavern that night.

Investigating officer Sergeant Bhekumuzi Dlamini from Montclair police station said the third person involved in the argument left the tavern and returned armed with a bush knife.

“A fight broke out, during which the accused allegedly overpowered the man and took the weapon from him. The man fled the tavern, with Dube and Mamba allegedly in pursuit,” said Dlamini.

The fleeing individual reportedly sought refuge at his place of employment, where he also resides. Security guards on duty pressed a panic button, and officers from a private security company responded swiftly, but by the time they arrived, the suspects had already fled.

“The security team began a search for the suspects. However, when the accused encountered one of the guards during the search, they allegedly assaulted him with the bush knife. The guard sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Police were alerted about the incident. All evidence were collected that led to the arrest of the two men,” Dlamini added.

The suspects were apprehended three days later and charged with attempted murder. The matter was adjourned until September 17 for a bail application.
