Merebank karatekas shine at national championships

The five karatekas, Azaria Govender, Ohana Chitray, Ayaan Bishun, and Liyana and Linyse Pillay, represented Merebank at the national championships.

FIVE young karatekas from Ninfu Shito-Ryu Karatedo in Merebank represented their dojo at the KSA National Development Karate Championships in Cape Town on August 30.

The students delivered outstanding performances against some of the country’s best emerging talent.

Among the highlights was Azaria Govender, who achieved first place in kumite and a commendable third place in kata, marking her as one of the standout competitors of the tournament.

Ohana Chitray added to the medal tally with a third place finish in kumite, while Ayaan Bishun secured third place in kata after a strong showing.

Sisters Liyana and Linyse Pillay also put in spirited performances, narrowly missing out on the podium in their respective divisions, but demonstrating skill and determination that promises much for the future.

The competition was fierce, with over 500 young karate athletes taking part, and some divisions featuring as many as 30 participants.

Despite this being their first national event, the Merebank students held their own and showcased the results of months of hard training.

Their instructor Shihan Craig Kisten Pillay said: “My students trained hard and long for this event, and considering it was their first national championship, they performed admirably. I am very proud of their dedication and achievements.”

The success of the Ninfu Shito-Ryu Karatedo students highlights the talent in the Merebank community and the potential of these young karatekas as they continue to develop on the national stage.
