Monday Miles: Walking through the great Camden Market [Video]

This week we are ditching the cramped tourist spots for another fan favourite that is just as rich with history and culture, Camden Market.

WELCOME to Monday Miles, our weekly travel series where we venture to some of the world’s most fascinating destinations, from awe-inspiring monuments to hidden gems. My name is Dillon Pillay, journalist for the Southlands Sun, and each week I take you along with me on some of my travels around the world, to share the stories and history of all these places.

This week, we’ve swapped royal chapels and historic towers for something a little more unconventional. Our next stop is Camden Market, London’s creative hub, where music, fashion, food and culture collide.

Each row of the market has something that attracts you to it, including this row of colourful umbrellas.

Walking through the cobblestone roads of Camden Market is a shopper’s paradise, as you see just rows upon rows of second-hand clothing pieces, the aroma of sizzling delicacies from global street foods and buskers strumming guitars near the canal. Camden’s history is not as silent as many of the other places we have visited.

Here’s why Camden Market remains one of London’s most lively spots.

Humble beginnings to a cultural powerhouse:

  • Camden Market started in 1974 as a small arts and crafts fair made up of only 16 stalls.
  • Originally only open on Sundays, the market’s popularity soon saw it open on more days.
  • Today it’s one of London’s largest and busiest markets, open seven days a week.
  • More than 1 000 stalls, shops, food establishments and bars are now housed across several interconnected markets.
  • The market is backdropped by the Regent’s Canal.

 A spirited history literally:

  • Camden was a hub for warehouses and gin distilleries in the 19th century.
  • That history was revived in 2014 with Half Hitch Gin, a local micro-distillery.
  • Their unique recipe features Malawian black tea and Calabrian bergamot.
  • Visitors can tour the distillery in West Yard, taste the gin, and discover the area’s boozy history.

Dingwalls: Where punk was born

  • Dingwalls Dance Hall opened in 1973 in a former timber yard.
  • It had the longest bar in London and became the hub of the city’s live music scene.
  • Iconic acts who performed here include The Clash, The Ramones, The Stranglers, Foo Fighters and The Strokes.
  • The venue became synonymous with Camden’s rebellious, alternative identity, a place where music history was made.

Fashion’s wild child:

  • In the 1970s, Camden became a magnet for subcultures; mods, punks, goths, and rockers flocked here to express themselves.
  • Sunday markets turned into fashion runways for alternative style; vintage Levi’s, Dr. Martens, band tees and platform boots became staples.
  • Several major fashion brands started here as humble stalls like Red or Dead, Collectif and General Eyewear.
  • Even now, Camden remains a haven for vintage gems and extreme street fashion.

Why Camden Market still matters:

  • Camden is more than a market; it’s a thriving cultural ecosystem.
  • It champions independent traders, artists, street performers and culinary creators
  • The area constantly reinvents itself while honouring its gritty, rebellious roots.
  • Whether you’re here for music, fashion, food or atmosphere, Camden delivers an experience that’s impossible to replicate.

Camden Market was such a treat to not only stroll through but splurge on as I am a big fanatic of pop culture. The market truly held everything from vintage clothing to art pieces that looked like they were from the future. It all comes together in a bright and colourful way.
