The forecast predicts widespread showers and severe thunderstorms throughout the province.

“The severe rainfall may result in the flooding of roads, bridges, and settlements, poor driving conditions, damage to infrastructure in some areas, and the destruction of mud-based houses. The anticipated rainfall may result in flooding of roads, bridges, and low-lying settlements, especially in vulnerable areas. Poor visibility and slippery surfaces will make driving hazardous, and informal or mud-based structures may be at risk of damage,” read the Saws statement.

The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and the emergency services have been put on high alert with teams fully mobilised to respond to any weather-related incidents throughout the day. Residents are strongly advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Children, the elderly and pets should be kept safe.

Motorists who must travel are advised to do so with caution. The City also reiterated that no one should ever try to cross swollen rivers or streams, as rapidly rising water can become life-threatening in an instant. If motorists find themselves trapped in floodwaters, they are advised to immediately exit their vehicles and seek higher ground.

The Municipality has emphasised that this weather warning is subject to change as the conditions develop and further updates will be issued by Saws if necessary.
