Khuseleka GBV centre comes to The Bluff

Department of Social Development will launch a centre on The Bluff to mark a significant milestone in the provincial effort to ending GBV.

KZN Department of Social Development will launch a life-saving centre for the victims of gender-based violence (GBV) on The Bluff. The launch of Khuseleka One Stop Centre is scheduled for December 18.

“Khuseleka,” meaning to protect, reflects the centre’s core mission which is to offer:

  • Sanctuary
  • Healing
  • Pathways to justice.

According to the department, GBV remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in South Africa, demanding a co-ordinated, survivor-centred response.

MEC for Social Development, Mbali Shinga, said the department remains committed to intensifying and accelerating efforts to achieve the elimination of all forms of violence against women and children in the province.

The department is mandated in respect of Pillar 4 (Response, Care, Support and Healing) of the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) to ensure the provision of sheltering services for victims of GBV.

“One of the key resolutions emanating from the Second Presidential Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Summit, held in November 2022, mandates that each province establish a Khuseleka One Stop Centre (KOSC). These centres are intended to redefine intervention models by providing integrated, multi-sectoral services that holistically address the needs of victims and contribute to breaking the cycle of gender-based violence,” the department said in a statement.

The Khuseleka One-Stop Centre has been established as a flagship safe haven designed to provide:

  • Comprehensive integrated dignified services to survivors of GBV and related social harms.

This centre will ensure survivors receive:

  • Immediate seamless confidential support without the burden of navigating fragmented systems.

The department said the launch of the GBV centre on The Bluff will mark a significant milestone in the provincial effort to ending GBV and building a society anchored in safety, equality, and compassion.
