Wentworth man taken into custody after family hostage standoff

Authorities confirmed that the standoff in Wentworth has ended after lengthy negotiations, with no serious injuries reported.

A MAN from Wentworth who held his family, including a child, hostage earlier today, has been taken into police custody following a lengthy negotiations with the police.

The man has allegedly been holding his family hostage as early as 5am today (December 21).

There were no injuries reported.

Spokesperson for PT Alarms Dhevan Govindasamy said, “A tense situation unfolded in Austerville Drive, Alabama Road where a man believed to be out on parole held his wife and child hostage in his blue Hyundai vehicle.

“Residents were understandably terrified as the incident played out. However, the situation was resolved after lengthy negotiations between the authorities and the suspect. The man was arrested, and the wife and child were safely rescued,” said Govindasamy.

The units involved were:

  • Wentworth police
  • Medical teams
  • Wentworth Community Police Forum and other emergency services.

“A fully loaded 9mm pistol and other live rounds were found in the suspect’s possession,” Govindasamy added.

Spokesperson for Wentworth police station, Captain Mbuso Gumede was not available for a comment at the time of going to press.
