Councillor pledges action on Ward 64 pressing issues
Norman Gilbert outlines his new priority plans to tackle pressing matters, including the problem of illegal dumping in Montclair.
CRACKING down on illegal dumping and putting an end to persistent dumping outside Glanville Road Garden site in Montclair are among the key priorities for Ward 64 councillor Norman Gilbert.
On Montclair Road building rubble that has been dumped on private property is creating a growing eyesore.
Gilbert said during his recent visit he discovered that the rubble was deposited by a company constructing one of the student accommodations in Montclair.
“Upon further enquiry, I was informed that the property owner had granted permission for the rubble to be dumped on his land. As I understand it, the rubble will be used for backfilling at the new construction site. I advised them that they should put a fence around the rubble as this constitutes illegal dumping. Illegal dumping in Montclair is a massive problem which I am going to take head-on and get eThekwini Municipality involved to clear all the hotspots,” said Gilbert.
He said the dumpsite at Glanville Road Garden site has become an eyesore as individuals dump waste outside the designated area.

Gilbert is also concerned about the influx of student accommodations which are being built without upgrading the already collapsing infrastructure.

“It is inappropriate to allow the influx of people to use the already failing infrastructure as this will put strain on it. Sewer infrastructure should be upgraded so that it can accommodate more people. In the interim, we see the influx of people and student accommodations being built in Montclair,” he said.
Some residents vented their anger on social media platforms, calling for an urgent intervention to the problem.

A Montclair resident, Stanley Dlamini, said building rubble is being dumped next to a children’s daycare centre which is currently closed for renovations.
“The construction company is now using the vacant site next to the creche for dumping the rubble. I visited the site this morning. There is currently nobody working on site but it could be that they are closed for holidays. The matter needs to be taken up with the construction company responsible for renovations,” said Dlamini.
