eThekwini Municipality debunk fake news on Wiggins Water treatment

Following an audio message circulating on social media, the eThekwini Municipality have confirmed that it is fake news.

THE eThekwini Municipality has clarified recent concerns prompted by misleading information about a supposed water shutdown at the Wiggins Water Treatment Works, that affects majority of the Durban South, scheduled for April 8.

This comes after an outdated audio recording, dating back to 2025, was widely circulated on social media platforms, especially WhatsApp, causing unnecessary alarm among residents.

The municipality explained that the audio message pertains to a maintenance shutdown originally planned for April 8 last year.

“This information is not current. There is no planned shutdown of the Wiggins Water Treatment Works on April 8. The audio clip was recorded and issued last year when uMngeni-uThukela Water conducted maintenance that temporarily affected eThekwini reservoirs,” read a statement from the eThekwini Municipality.

The municipality is urging residents and businesses to verify all information through official municipal communication channels before sharing it further.
