Station the force

The Bluff Ratepayers and Residents Association is urging the public to support its petition to open a Metro Police station on The Bluff.

THE Bluff Ratepayers and Residents Association (BRRA) has formally issued a call for support, encouraging the residents and various stakeholders throughout The Bluff to support its petition, that seeks to enhance the safety within their community.

The petition itself serves part of a memorandum that will be submitted to eThekwini Metropolitan Police Service and the eThekwini Municipality, calling for the establishment of a dedicated Metro Police station at the Brighton Beach Lifeguard Building as well as to increase visible policing presence across the entire The Bluff area.

Motivation behind the petition

Allison Schoeman, chairperson of the BRRA, said that this concerted effort stems from growing concerns regarding criminal activity in the area.

“The Bluff is facing increasing challenges, including drug activity, theft, violent crime, and public disorder. While SAPS continues to serve under pressure, it is clear that additional Metro Police presence is urgently needed to protect our community and prevent further escalation,” said Schoeman.

Changes expected

She added that the site has already been prepared and earmarked so it can be an immediate and practical solution. Should it receive approval, a Metro Police station at this specific site is expected to considerably improve response times, augment visible policing efforts, act as a deterrent to criminal activities and contribute to re-establishing a sense of safety among the residents.

The petition additionally expresses support for the promotion of Captain Morrison to the role of Station Commander for the envisioned facility. Captain Morrison, a long-serving officer and a resident of The Bluff, is widely recognised for his extensive knowledge of the area and its particular challenges.

Strength in numbers

Schoeman urges residents to review the memorandum and register their support by signing the petition. The association has underscored that widespread participation will significantly strengthen the argument for prompt intervention.

The BRRA has reiterated its position that this initiative presents a vital opportunity for The Bluff community to adopt a unified, proactive stance in addressing crime and in ensuring a safer environment for all its members.
