Pelican flies in the wild again
A pelican that was rescued on The Bluff took flight again recently following weeks of rehabilitation at Crow.
THE Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) reintroduced a pelican into the wild on April 17, after being rehabilitated by Crow.

Clint Halkett-Siddall, the director at Crow, said a Pink-backed Pelican, scientifically known as Pelecanus rufescens, was found on The Bluff, walking on the street visibly disorientated. Halkett-Siddall said the bird was a considerable distance from any body of water and exhibited evident signs of spatial confusion.
“Disoriented and vulnerable, she needed a safe place to recover, and that’s exactly what she found with Crow. With rest, specialised care and a steady diet of fresh fish, she gradually regained her strength and was ready to return to her natural environment,” said Halkett-Siddall.
Following a complete recovery, the pelican was successfully released on April 17 at an estuary near Durban North. The pelican’s release underscores another successful rehabilitation at Crow.
