Engen Maths and Science School launches new blended platform
The new blended platform being introduced combines traditional classroom instructions with digital learning tools.
AFTER nearly 40 years devoted to nurturing aspiring scientists and engineers, the Engen Maths and Science Schools (EMSS) programme has launched a new phase, introducing a dynamic blended learning platform with the intention of fundamentally changing how it supported its learners.

As the landscape of education continued to shift, the programme recognised the need to embrace innovative methods to ensure its continued effectiveness and resonance.
The new model
The refreshed model was formally introduced during a series of national onboarding workshops held on April 11 in various cities.
At the Blue Roof Life Space in Wentworth, learners were introduced to a new system that merged the familiar classroom environment with digital resources, providing a learning experience that was both more adaptable and easier to reach.

A key component of this new model is a Learning Management System. This system ensures learners have continuous access to study materials, providing them with structured assignments, and allowing them to track their own progress.
Joining EMSS
Gaining admission to EMSS remains highly competitive, with learners undergoing a rigorous process of selection and assessment. To further encourage achievement, EMSS has also implemented incentives based on performance, along with formal recognition for its highest-achieving learners.
During the onboarding workshops, learners in Grades 10 to 12 completed initial assessments in mathematics and physical sciences.
They also received specialised study resources and had the opportunity to engage with mentors and programme partners who will provide support throughout the academic year.

Engen CSI manager Olwethu Mdabula shared that the organisation felt a genuine enthusiasm for the programme’s evolution.
“We are truly energised by this next chapter for EMSS. The new blended learning platform represents a meaningful step forward, one that modernises how we deliver support while staying true to the heart of what EMSS has always been about. By combining digital innovation with personal engagement, we are giving learners the best of both worlds,” she said.
The programme is a collaborative effort, delivered in partnership with Raizcorp and Advantage Learn. Looking ahead, EMSS plans to introduce new modules in Artificial Intelligence and Entrepreneurship starting in 2027.
As the 2026 academic year continues, the successful introduction of the new blended learning platform signifies more than just an update to a programme.
