Rezoning dispute heads back to Durban High Court

Clairwood residents and CRRA leaders are expected to stage a placard demonstration outside the Durban High Court tomorrow.

THE Clairwood Ratepayers and Residents Association (CRRA) is preparing for the third day of its court battle with eThekwini Municipality over proposed rezoning of the area.

Scores of residents from Clairwood and surroundings are expected to hold a placard demonstration outside the Durban High Court tomorrow (May 15).

The residents took the matter to court as their engagements with the City did not yield positive results.

In October last year, CRRA and residents staged a protest outside the Durban High Court opposing an urgent application filed by eThekwini Municipality.

The CRRA brought an urgent application seeking to interdict and restrain the municipality from approving, implementing, or permitting any development in terms of the new Special Zone: Clairwood Logistics Park.

The association argued that no such development should proceed unless critical infrastructure requirements are met.

These include the physical upgrading of roads in and around Clairwood in line with a comprehensive traffic plan.

The CRRA also requested that no development be approved until a detailed Master Plan, supported by traffic and infrastructure reports, has been completed, made public, and implemented.

Community leaders encourage residents to attend

Public relations officer for the CRRA, Ravin Brijlal, said the case between the CRRA and the City is of vital importance, and urged residents to pledge their support.

“Yesterday (May 12) we held a meeting with the community at the YAS Community Hall to explain the next step. The matter before the High Court is the heart of Clairwood residents as it affects their lives,” said Brijlal.
