This action would be undertaken in accordance with relevant municipal by-laws, serving as a way for them to recover the cumulative storage and administrative expenses.

To recover the vehicle

For a vehicle to be released, owners are required to present the relevant documentation to prove ownership, namely the logbook and personal ID. Additionally, it is a prerequisite that all outstanding fines, along with any towing and storage charges, are settled prior to the vehicle’s collection.

The municipality said that this is part of the efforts to both clear municipal impound facilities of unclaimed vehicles and to encourage owners to resolve any outstanding issues related to their vehicles.

Contact information

Individuals seeking to collect their vehicles or requiring further information can visit the Metro police head offices at 16 Archie Gumede Place, Durban. The facility operates between 08:00 and 16:00. For direct enquiries, contact the Metro police on 031 311 2964.
