Human remains case: Two released on warning

It is alleged that the bones had been exhumed from a cemetery in Clairwood before being transported and dumped in the area.

TWO individuals who were taken in for questioning following the discovery of human skeletal remains at an illegal dumping site in Ezimbokodweni have been released on warning pending further investigations.

KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said a man was allegedly sent by another person to dispose of what was believed to be ordinary waste on June 8, but the items later turned out to be skeletal remains of human beings.

Netshiunda confirmed that police investigations into the matter are ongoing.

“A case of violation of graves has been opened for investigation,” said Netshiunda.

It is alleged that the bones had been exhumed from a cemetery in Clairwood before being transported and dumped in the area.

It is further alleged that a supervisor who was on duty on the day of the incident instructed a member of the public to dispose of a plastic bag containing human remains.

The supervisor has since been dismissed from employment.

The incident came to light after a waste picker made the disturbing discovery.

According to the Cemeteries and Crematoria By-law of 2015, Chapter 4, Section 24(1): “A person may not exhume any human remains without the consent of the authorised official, except where the human remains are to be exhumed for any judicial or other enquiry upon an order of a competent officer of the law.”
