Dawn Gounden from Renegades Search and Rescue has cautioned the communities as authorities begin removing shark nets from various beaches. She noted that the influx of sardines draws significant numbers of large marine predators into shallower waters, which complicates the safety environment for individuals entering the sea.

Stop potential tragedies

“In previous years, numerous drowning incidents have been documented along the coastline during this season. Tragically, some victims were never recovered despite extensive search efforts,” she said.

Gounden also cautioned that the desire to take photos in close proximity of marine activity often led to instance of unnecessary risk taking.

Adhere to beach officials

In response to these risks, beachgoers are advised to avoid swimming in unprotected areas, adhere to all warning signs and comply with instructions from lifeguards, emergency services and beach management.
