FOLLOWING a shooting that left one person dead in Wentworth on September 22, a 16-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm. However, the police said there is currently no evidence linking the suspect to a recent shooting incident.

The shooting happened in the corner of Major Calvert and Woodville Roads, while the suspect was arrested a day later on Woodville Road.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth Captain Mbuso Gumede said the suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition when officers were responding to another possible shooting incident.

“The Wentworth Crime Prevention members were on duty patrolling when they received a complaint of a possible shooting along Woodville Road. The members then responded to the complainant and before they could reach the scene, driving along the road, noticed a [teenager] coming from the direction from where the shooting was reported,” said Gumede.

“The police officers stopped the vehicle, and approached the suspect. Upon conducting a bodily search on him, the police found a black CZ 75 firearm, 12 live 9mm ammunitions and one magazine in his jacket,” said Gumede.

He added that the recovered firearm would be sent for ballistics testing to establish whether it had been used in any other crimes.

The suspect appeared in court for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
