RESIDENTS across eThekwini can expect improved refuse service collection after the municipality unveiled a new R43m fleet of waste management vehicles recently.

The new fleet is aimed at boosting service delivery and strengthening eThekwini Municipality’s capacity to collect waste more efficiently.

The fleet was officially unveiled on August 7 by eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba.

He said the investment demonstrates the municipality’s commitment to improving service delivery by equipping frontline teams with modern, reliable and fit-for-purpose operational resources.

The 18 newly acquired vehicles comprise:
•Refuse compactors
•Industrial refuse compactors
•Service wagons
•Street sweepers
•Bakkies and
•Box trucks

The fleet will be deployed across the city to:

• Improve refuse collection.
• Strengthen street sweeping operations.
• Support fleet maintenance activities.
• Reduce downtime caused by ageing equipment.
• Improve response times to service delivery requests.

Xaba said the investment reflects the City’s determination to build a cleaner, healthier and more liveable city.

“The acquisition of these new transportation assets is a clear demonstration of the City’s commitment to improving service delivery and ensuring that our communities receive reliable and efficient waste management services. A well-equipped fleet enables our teams to respond more effectively to the needs of residents, maintain cleaner public spaces and contribute to a healthier environment for all,” said Xaba.

He added that investing in modern operational resources is essential to meeting the demands of a rapidly growing city.

“As eThekwini continues to grow, so too does the demand for essential municipal services.
These new vehicles will improve operational efficiency, reduce disruptions caused by ageing equipment and support our commitment to delivering quality services to every community. This investment is ultimately about improving the quality of life of our residents and building a city we can all be proud of, “ said Xaba.
