Anglers ready to take on championships

THE South African Protea Ladies Surf Casting team are revved up to compete at the FIPS-M World Games in Tunisia in November 2022.
The female anglers will compete against multiple countries for the World Cup, the team’s manager, Theo Potgieter, and coach, Jace Govender, will accompany anglers, Riana Vermaak, Cornie van Greunen and Sachali Viljoen to the 38th World Championship Shore Angling Seniors and 29th World Championship Shore Angling Ladies competitions.
Unlike most sports, fishing is considered a non-spectator sport and does not qualify for any funding from sports councils.
Running out of time to rake in the money needed to get the team to the championships, which will be held from November 19 to 26, business owners and residents are requested to assist with vouchers for a lucky draw or sponsorships for the team.
Theo said he is confident that the community will rally together to help the women to be able to compete on a global level.
“Unfortunately, we do not receive any funding from any sports councils or the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) as we are deemed a non-spectator sport. This is sad since the recreational fishing industry generates about R32 billion each year.

“We have set high standards in this facet and have numerous female world cup winners and in 2021, the pair’s team came first, which brought back the world cup. We are dedicated to teaching people about sustainable fishing and youth development in many different ways,” Theo said.
The team is responsible for their own costs, which include transportation, airfare, accommodation, meals, competition entry fees and attire.
