Youngsters showcase skills at tournament

SCORES of soccer fanatics gathered to cheer for and support young soccer stars who played at the Wentworth Warriors Football Club’s Spring soccer tournament at Highbury Sports Grounds.

The 7-a-side tournament was opened to teams from U6 to U17s and showcased the talent of young footballers from the Wentworth, Bluff and surrounding areas.

Coach and owner of Young Cavaliers Football Club, Kerwyn Kast, said young footballers enjoyed the thrill of being able to participate in the tournament.

“Our football club is solely focused on youth development and not just in football, but in cultivating morals and values. Within two months of us starting our junior divisions, we now have more than 60 players and five divisions from U9s to U17s, all from the Wentworth community. Our focus is centered on instilling values of peace, love and hope in children from different backgrounds. We hope to bring children together from different social environments and give them hope. We know that children need ways to keep them away from the violence that is currently plaguing our younger generation. We realised through past experiences that youth take to the streets when they lose hope and that is the motivation behind what we are trying to achieve.

“We also realised that some parents cannot afford to pay to play in teams so they would suddenly stop playing. We therefore do not charge any fees and try to ensure the children have what they need to play the game they love. It is not an easy journey, but it is worth it when we see the joy it brings to them,” added Kast.
