Weapons and drugs found during school search

While conducting the search police found a number of items that are not permitted in school premises.

KNIVES, dagga crushers, cigarettes lighters, space muffins, screwdrivers, matches and Zanax, prescription drug, were some of the items found on learners at Wentworth Secondary School during a random search by police.

The random search was conducted by various different law enforcement officials.

On March 7, Wentworth police, together with members of the Vispol Social Crime Prevention Unit, Wentworth Community Policing Forum members, and personnel from a security company hired by the school, conducted the search in line with their school safety initiatives.

The team, led by Vispol commander, Lieutenant Colonel Clive Myburg, confiscated items found on learners which were not permitted to be inside school premises.

Items which were not allowed in school were confiscated from learners.

Communications officer of the Wentworth police station, Captain Mbuso Gumede said, “Cellphones were also confiscated and handed over to the educators. The school policy does not allow learners to carry certain items inside the school. More schools will be visited and the police will do such visits unannounced,” Gumede added.

Myburg said, “Learners are being warned to refrain from carrying illegal items into school, because this will result in them being arrested and charged for crimes of illegal possession.”
