#CasualDay – WATCH: Community support makes a difference in lives of persons with disabilities
The Merewent Cheshire Home caters for adults with disabilities and is grateful for the community's support.
THE residents and staff at the Merewent Cheshire Home in Wentworth wore their brightest smiles as the country celebrates Casual Day on September 1.
Casual Day is South Africa’s leading fundraising and awareness campaign for persons with disabilities. Each year, people are encouraged to go to work or school dressed differently, either dressed up or dressed down, and to wear the official Casual Day sticker and merchandise to show their support for persons with disabilities.

The campaign encourages the public to contribute financially through a small donation for a sticker and at the same time, lobbies for the full inclusion and equity of persons with disabilities.
Winnie Mkhize, manager at the home, expressed her gratitude to the community for their support towards the home by purchasing a sticker and raising awareness.
The home, which is a registered non-profit organisation and a residential facility situated in Wentworth, provides 24-hour care to 35 adults with physical disabilities, aged between 18 and 59. The home has been rendering services to persons with disabilities for the past 29 years.

The campaign is also the flagship project of the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD).
Therina Wentzel, NPCD’s national director, said that a smile can trigger a positive chain reaction of wonderfully uncontrollable proportions.
“Casual Day has raised over R404m since 1995, thanks to the wonderful support of members of the public who purchase their stickers from participating retail stores, participating companies, our 600+ beneficiary NPOs and schools that renew their participation every year.
“The proceeds go to persons with disabilities at schools, homes and workshops represented by the participating beneficiary organisations,” she said.
