Empowering the disabled through sport on the South Coast
Made for More, a non-profit organisation, needs assistance from the community to enable them to expand to more communities and reach more people.

MADE for More is a Wentworth-based non-profit organisation (NPO) equipping and empowering people with disabilities by using sport as a tool to break the stigma that exists within communities. The NPO wants to see all people, no matter their ability, living a purpose-filled life.
Made for More was founded in 2016 and works in various communities and offers various programmes for those living with disabilities. These include exercise therapy, boccia, Bible studies, adaptive surfing and leadership camps.

General manager Anele Zama said adaptive surfing training is done at various beaches in Durban and the South Coast.
“Boccia is played at Merewent Cheshire Home, Mason Lincoln Special School and in other surrounding communities,” said Anele.
Boccia is a precision ball sport related to bowls, while adaptive surfing is for persons living with a disability.
“For a few years in a row, we hosted the KZN Para Surfing Championships and the SA Para Surf Championships, and some of our surfers were selected to represent the country in the United States. People who have never been on aeroplanes or left the country before have achieved their wildest dreams through the programmes. This gives us the courage to keep pouring into these communities. There is so much gold out there just waiting for people to find and unravel,” she said.
Lerato Seroke who has trained under Made for More is one of the adaptive surfers who are quickly making a name for themselves in the sport. In 2023, Made for More was nominated and won the Recreation Body of the Year award at the KZN Sports Awards, and was also nominated for the 2023 Laureus Sports for Good award.
“This award represents hope, not just for the organisation but all the beneficiaries and athletes, as well. There is a lot of work that is involved in putting the programmes together, especially with restricted funds. It is so great to know that we are seen and heard. This also means we can reach more people in other communities, as well, whom we are yet to discover,” said Anele.

This year, the organisation plans to expand to more communities so that more people can be reached and empowered. Being an NPO, Made for More relies largely on donations from businesses, families and other Good Samaritans.
“We also do have businesses that do annual fundraisers on our behalf. Monthly partners and donations help us to thrive and maintain sustainability in including, equipping and empowering people with disabilities. Please join us as a family and become a part of this incredible journey of hope and restoration,” said Anele.
