How to combat gun violence – partners in policing campaign

Brighton Beach Police educate The Bluff community on gun violence and public safety precautions.

THE main objective of the collaboration between various stakeholders was to raise awareness about the increasing incidents of armed robberies afflicting the Brighton Beach policing precinct.

Captain Louise Le Roux, Brighton Beach Police communications officer, expressed gratitude to the participating stakeholders, the Metro Police, Mzansi Security Tactical Unit, Fidelity ADT, Reho Protection Services, RTL8 Community Group, Bluff CPF Sub-Forum, Bluff Hillside Mall and Bluff Towers management and tenants.

The partners stressed the significance of reporting illegal firearm possession and distribution, as well as irresponsible firearm handling by lawful gun owners, through channels such as the anonymous Crime Stop tip-off line (08600 10111) and the MySAPS Mobile App (12310111#).

Stakeholders distributed 500 flyers with information on gun violence and 500 robbery safety flyers to the community, with the aim of educating and empowering residents with essential safety guidelines.

The robbery information flyers included a comprehensive list of safety precautions, such as:

  • staying vigilant and avoiding distractions
  • walking far from the curb and facing oncoming traffic
  • avoiding texting, talking on the phone or listening to music while walking
  • complying with perpetrators’ demands if confronted
  • avoiding risky areas, particularly at night
  • refraining from carrying large sums of cash and personal identification documents
  • using whistles or seeking help if feeling threatened or followed

This collaborative endeavour is aimed to highlight the prevailing crime trends while providing valuable safety knowledge to the community.

The united front presented by these partners underscores the collective commitment to addressing gun violence and enhancing public safety in the Brighton Beach area.
