Community seminar empowers Wentworth residents

Residents gained knowledge of the importance of having a will at the seminar.

IN response to community needs, ProBono.org organised a community seminar, on March 6, at Blue Roof Life Spaces in Wentworth, focusing on two crucial issues: gender-based violence (GBV) and estate management for the deceased.

This free event aimed to provide essential information and support, especially for older individuals dealing with these challenges.

The decision to tackle GBV and estate matters came from residents’ expressed concerns, indicating a demand for guidance and education on these pressing topics. In response, ProBono.org, with Hughes Attorney Inc, designed a comprehensive seminar programme to empower attendees with the knowledge and resources necessary to navigate these issues effectively.

Nonsikelelo Ngcobo, an attorney from Hughes Attorney Inc, said, “The focus was on how we as a community can get together to alleviate such crimes that are accelerating annually in our communities, and how can we assist the police and the innocent in addressing such issues. Secondly, we focused on what the options for legal relief were for victims of such heinous crimes. Safe houses and victim-friendly units were exhibited to the community members.”

Simultaneously, estate management emerged as a critical discussion point, with Gillian Hughes, director of Hughes Attorney Inc and seminar officiator, stressing the importance of having a will and the consequences of not having one.

Hughes said the event successfully facilitated dialogue and knowledge-sharing, fostering a sense of empowerment and collective responsibility in addressing GBV.
