Wentworth woman arrested for unlawful possession of prescription medication

The Wentworth Police warn that it is unlawful for individuals to possess large quantities of prescription medication.

A 24-YEAR-OLD woman is set to make her second appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s court today (April 23) on charges of unlawfully possessing prescription medication.

The arrested suspect was found in possession of over 20 boxes of prescription drugs, including cough mixtures at her residence in Wentworth on April 21.

According to Wentworth police spokesperson Captain Mbuso Gumede, the arrest transpired following a tip-off regarding a suspect harbouring prescription medication.

“Acting on intelligence, officers, led by Warrant Officer Brian James, conducted surveillance in the area. Subsequently, a search of the suspect’s premises uncovered unregistered pharmaceuticals, including two packs of Lenazine, one pack of Stilpane, and 18 sealed bottles of bronchial medication,” said Gumede.

All confiscated items were taken to the Wentworth SAPS for further investigation.

“The suspect was apprehended and charged under the Medicine Act. She appeared in court earlier this week and was granted bail of R1 500. It is unlawful for individuals to possess large quantities of prescription medication. Only those authorised by the Medicine Act are permitted to dispense or handle prescribed drugs,” Gumede added.
