Excitement as primary schools welcome first time learners

Thousands of new Grade R and Grade 1 learners began their schooling journey for the first time this week.

THE 2025 academic year kicked off with thousands of Grade Rs and Grade 1s going to primary schools for the first time today (January 15).

There were mixed emotions in the morning as some of the newcomers were a little nervous about going to the classrooms.

Wentworth Primary School was abuzz with lots of activities as the school welcomed the new learners who began their schooling journey with smiles and excitement.

Yakhokonke Cele, a Grade 1 learner at Wentworth Primary School, was beaming with excitement on her first day at school.

Her mother Phumelele Cele said her daughter was over the moon when she first heard that she was going to school.

“She has been talking about this day with excitement. I really hope she will do well,” said Cele.

Assegai Primary School was also abuzz with various activities early in the morning as parents brought their children to the school.

A member of the school governing body, Andre de Bruin, said the school has proven to have a good academic record in the Wentworth area. He congratulated all the new learners who began their schooling journey this year, and wished them a prosperous academic year.
