School shoe project helps learners take a step in the right direction

The Montclair School Shoes Project in conjunction with ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter distributed shoes to learners in need.

THE Montclair School Shoes Project, together with ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter, brightened up learners at Woodlands’ Khulangolwazi Special School with a generous donation of school shoes on February 17.

Fifty pairs of shoes were donated to the vulnerable children at the school. Sinenhlanhla Sibahle Mdletshe, the ward administrator at the ward 64 councillor’s office, said the Montclair School Shoes Project came to them with a request to raise and donate school shoes. The councillor then facilitated by linking them with a sponsor who contributed to the donation.

Xolela Moroke, who started the Montclair School Shoes Project, stated that the project was conceived after he had a conversation with his neighbour Sibusiso Gule, who noticed some learners at Khulangolwazi Special School sporting sandals instead of school shoes.

This motivated them to call the school to identify the orphaned and vulnerable learners who needed assistance.

“The school appreciates the donation, and we intend to implement the project in other schools in Montwood,” Moroke responded.

Mdletshe said she thinks that this was an excellent idea by the community members. “It’s this type of collaboration with members of the community and public that inspire me to keep working at the councillor’s office, I look forward to more initiatives in the future and collaborating with other community groups,” she said.

This initiative demonstrates the power of grassroots work in helping needy learners. The Montclair School Shoes Project seeks to expand beyond school shoes and assist more schools in the Montwood area.
