Help small animals during heavy rainfall, says Crow
With multiple weather warnings issued for KZN, Crow is calling on the community to assist in rescuing small animals affected by the heavy rain.
AS continuous rainfall and heavy storms are expected to cover eThekwini in the coming days, Center for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) has issued a plea to assist small animals, as the centre tends to see an influx of small animals coming in during rainy weather.

Clint Halkett-Siddall, director at Crow, said, “Many small animals get washed away, making them difficult for people to see and rescue. Many are swept into drains, rivers, and are washed out to sea or hidden under debris, reducing their chances of survival.”
Rain-swept birds and small animals are subject to a lot of hazards. Hypothermia is one of the biggest hazards that they face. Halkett-Siddall said being wet and cold weakens the small animal and by the time help is available to them, their slow reaction speed takes its effect.
How to help small animals during heavy rain:
If you find a bird or small mammal in distress in the rain, adhere to these vital steps to help the animal:
- Cover and secure – Wrap the animal in a clean towel. If it is a bird, place its wings gently against its body to prevent injury.
- Handle with care – Gently scoop up the animal with both hands, supporting its legs and feet. When lifting a bird of prey, exercise extra caution as their talons are dangerous.
- Provide temporary shelter – Bring the animal indoors and place it in a well-ventilated box or basket lined with a towel, blanket or paper towels to prevent slipping.
- Keep warm and dry – Carefully warm and dry the animal with a low-heat hairdryer. The animal needs to be kept warm to prevent hypothermia.
- Do not feed the animal – Avoid feeding a stressed or chilled animal as it could do more harm than good. Avoid giving any food until professional advice is sought.
- Do not keep it as a pet – Wildlife should always be rehabilitated and released back into their natural habitat.
