Justice delayed: Family still search for answers after brutal murder

Treyvonne was stabbed to death in August 2019 for his cellphone and earrings while walking back to a party after accompanying a friend home.

SIX years after Wentworth teenager Treyvonne “Bob” Griffiths was brutally stabbed to death for his cellphone and earrings, his killers still walk free, and his family says they have been abandoned by the justice system.

Treyvonne, who had just celebrated his 18th birthday, was stabbed to death in August 2019 while walking back to a party after accompanying a friend home.

His aunt, Hettie Griffiths, said three suspects were arrested later that year and appeared in court, but were granted bail. Since then, the family has received no updates from the investigating officer.

“My nephew deserves justice. It is unfair that after six years there has been no progress,” she said.

Treyvonne had completed a fire safety course, and his family hoped he would pursue quality control studies. They described him as a humble, non-violent young man, their only hope for a better life.

He would have turned 24 on August 7 this year. The family marked the anniversary of his death with a remembrance ceremony on August 10.

“We still hope justice will be served,” Hettie added.

“On his way back to the party house, the two perpetrators attacked him. They held him down, one grabbed him by the neck, while the other stabbed him eight times in the thighs. Despite his injuries, he managed to crawl back to the house, where his friends rushed him to the hospital.

“His friends came knocking on our door to tell us what had happened. My sister Mary and I immediately rushed to the hospital. By the time we arrived, he was already in the emergency room. As we waited outside, the doctor called his mother in and told her he had been stabbed in the femoral arteries and had lost a significant amount of blood. It was the worst night of our lives,” she said.

Attempts to get comment from KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, were unsuccessful at the time of publishing.
