Cleaning up the community’s act
The clean-up operation aimed to tackle illegal dumping, while raising awareness about the issue in Montclair.
A clean-up operation by the Durban Solid Waste (DSW) and South Durban Basin Area-Based Management (SDB-ABM) was held outside the Glanville Road garden refuse site in Montclair on August 19.

The operation involved members of the SDB-ABM, DSW operations, DSW education and DSW who cleaned up piles of garbage outside the refuse site.
SDB-ABM co-ordinator Irene Chetty said the clean-up was aimed at restoring the area’s appearance and raising awareness on proper waste management.

“We wanted to act together with DSW and other stakeholders to keep the area outside the garden refuse section clean and welcoming. But more importantly, this was about highlighting the collective responsibility of all residents in keeping our community clean,” she said.

Following the success of the initiative, DSW education officer Emeldah Mkhulisi emphasised that keeping the site clean relies on the commitment of the residents. She reported that random dumping continues to be a recurring issue at the Glanville Road site.
“There are simply too many residents who are disposing of their trash outside and not inside the actual site. We are asking everyone to please adhere to the opening and closing time of 07:00 to 17:00 and discard of trash within the allocated times,” said Mkhulisi.
Mkhulisi added that continued dumping elsewhere outside the DSW site undermines the notion of having a controlled facility and presents health and environmental risks to residents.
SDB-ABM and DSW are urging residents to do their part in stopping illegal dumping and making the community cleaner and safer.
