Montclair back-to-school clean-up a huge success

The Montwood environmental team, managed by the ratepayers association, cleaned up areas of Montclair in preparation of back-to-school.

THE Montwood Ratepayers Association’s environmental team began the year with a back-to-school campaign, organising a clean-up in and around Mowat Park High School on January 11.

The environmental team, managed by the ratepayers association, started this initiative by drawing various stakeholders into one common commitment of community upliftment.

“We believe in the commitment of giving back and helping the community. Our back-to-school campaign is one we enjoy doing for the benefit of others. Seeing teachers, learners, and community members unite to make a difference was absolutely amazing,” said the ratepayers association’s Heidi Geyser.

Around 40 participants, including representatives from organisations and departments such as Durban Solid Waste (DSW), Durban South Security (DSS), Musallah Dawood, Montclair CPF Youth Desk, Montclair Police, Montclair Community Taskforce, the Parks Department, and the Department of Correctional Services, participated in the clean-up.

Geyser said the Department of Correctional Services had committed itself to continue working with the environmental team in future beautification projects. She thanked DSW for providing all the clean-up materials and DSS who ensured safety during the event.

Mowat Park High School principal Amanda Ngidi thanked all the stakeholders involved. “We sincerely thank the Montwood Ratepayers Association, Montclair CPF, DSW, Montclair Environmental Club, Montclair police, Department of Correctional Services and all stakeholders who were involved in this campaign. It was a huge success, and as usual it showed us that together we can always make our community a better place,” said Ngidi.

However, Ngidi complained of illegal dumping near the school, especially along Benson Road. “This does not portray a good image of our school or the surrounding community,” said Ngidi. She urged residents to play their part and help alleviate this issue,” said Ngidi.

The Montwood Ratepayers Association thanked all contributors, saying such initiatives are what their motto stands for: “For Better Unity, Help Our Community.”
