Wentworth robber sentenced to five years imprisonment

The accused was found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances and sentenced to five years imprisonment.

A WENTWORTH man was sentenced to five years, with two years suspended on condition that he is not convicted of robbery during the suspension period.

Reon Forbay (19) was found guilty of robbery which he committed on April 5 on Austerville Drive, Wentworth.

According to the police, the victim was walking on Austerville Drive when Forbay approached him and demanded cash.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said Forbay threatened the victim with a knife.

“The accused then placed his hand inside the victim’s pants pocket and pulled out a cellphone. When the victim turned around, he realised that the suspect was someone he knew very well.

“After committing a robbery at knifepoint, the suspect fled with the cellphone, running through the pathways between the flats.

“On April 6, the victim proceeded to Wentworth police station to open a case. Police officers on duty accompanied him to locate the suspect involved in the incident. While driving around in Wentworth, the victim positively identified the accused walking along Austerville Drive. The members of the visible policing (Vispol) sprang into action and arrested the accused,” said Gumede.

Forbay was arrested in possession of a knife, which he had allegedly used the previous day to rob the victim.

“A case of possession of dangerous weapon was opened and the suspect was detained on two cases of robbery and possession of dangerous weapon.”

Both cases were assigned to Detective Sergeant Sibonelo Vincent Nzama who collected all the evidence. On April 7, the matter was ready for the first court appearance. The detective opposed bail in court, and Forbay remained in custody. After numerous court appearances he was found guilty in both cases.

The Vispol members were commended by the Station Management for tracing the suspect and effecting the arrest.
