Level 2 storm alert: eThekwini urges residents to stay safe

The SA Weather Service has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, and excessive lightning across KZN.

THE eThekwini Municipality urges residents to remain vigilant and take proactive safety measures following a Level 2 severe thunderstorm warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for Saturday (November 15).

The forecast model indicates a level 2 severe thunderstorm will be accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail across KZN, continuing into the evening.

This warning includes the eThekwini region.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms may result in:

  • The flooding of roads,
  • Bridges, and settlements, poor driving conditions and,
  • The destruction of mud-based houses as well as the interruption of essential services.

“There could also be danger to life due to fast-flowing streams of water. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and maintain a safe following distance while driving on wet roads,” eThekwini said in a statement.

The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on standby and are monitoring forecasts.

The City advised residents to exercise caution, to stay indoors, and to avoid travelling, unless absolutely necessary.

“The public is urged to move livestock and cars to safe sheltered areas as there may be flying debris. Residents living in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, are advised to take the necessary safety precautions.

The public is reminded to not cross swollen rivers and streams.
