Residents in the Durban South areas stood together for various demonstrations in support of the G20 women’s shutdown.

DURBAN South residents united in a stand of solidarity this morning (November 21) as they joined the national G20 Women’s Shutdown, saying they would no longer remain silent in the face of the escalating gender-based violence crisis in South Africa.

Across the Durban South, residents took to the streets in demonstrations that ranged from lying down for 15 minutes in symbolic standstills to holding placards outside the police station to a motorcade throughout the community, with many adorning black and purple in honour of the women lost daily to femicide.

Community groups, families, children, NGOs and local leaders joined hands to show that the fight against GBV is not solely a woman’s fight, but a collective stand in demand of justice, safety and change.
