Motorists warned of temporary N2 closures

The closure is to facilitate construction works as part of the flyover widening from the CBD to King Shaka International Airport.

THE South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) has announced that the N2 northbound carriageway between Solomon Mahlangu Drive (Edwin Swales Interchange) and EB Cloete Interchange will be closed on November 29.

The closure is to facilitate construction work as part of the flyover widening from the Durban CBD to King Shaka International Airport.

Sanral’s KZN specialist geometrics engineer said, “This closure is part of the ongoing progress in the upgrade of the EB Cloete Interchange and surrounding bridges.”

Scheduled closures: N2 Northbound carriageway closure 

Closure 1: N2 northbound closure at M7/Edwin Swales Interchange (Amanzimtoti to King Shaka International Airport) from 18:00, Saturday, November 29 to 02:00, on Sunday, November 30.

  • N2 northbound fully closed at the offramp to M7/ Edwin Swales. All vehicles to proceed onto the M7.
  • N2 northbound onramp from M7/Edwin Swales fully closed.

Closure 2: N2 northbound closure at EB Cloete Interchange (Amanzimtoti to King Shaka International Airport) from 02:00, Sunday, November 30 to 18:00, Sunday, November 30.

  • N2 north bound fully closed at the offramp to Durban CBD and Pinetown. The N2 is only closed between the EB Cloete on and offramps for through traffic. All ramps remain fully open and the N2 remains open North of EB Cloete interchange.

Sanral confirmed that the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place.

All motorists are advised to:

  • Plan ahead
  • Allow for additional travel time
  • Adhere to posted signage and reduced speed limits within construction zones.

Sanral advises taxi and truck drivers to use alternative routes

Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period. Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes.

“Sanral appeals to road users to note and comply with the advance warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling past the construction work zones. To prioritise the safety of both the construction workers and road users, the speed limit along the route will be reduced during construction,” Lowe added.
