Christmas Day can be overwhelming, especially with young ones around. Here are four ways to avoid those toddler tantrums on Christmas Day.

Check out these four tips from Joanne Mallon, author of Toddlers: An Instruction Manual, on how to handle the inevitable Christmas Day meltdown.

Expect the unexpected

Christmas Day can be extremely busy and unexpected. Many young children do not react well to change, and this may cause them to feel uneasy and throw a tantrum. Sticking to your toddler’s regular meal and nap times can help them feel at ease with a sense of routine. But don’t blame yourself if things go wrong.

Don’t let your toddler open all of their Christmas presents at once

Many parents enjoy the ‘wow’ factor of a large pile of stuff, but this can sometimes be very overwhelming for small children. Instead, spread their gift-giving out over a few days.

Anticipate tantrums before they occur

Try to plan ahead of time. If you know that Granny’s house if full of breakables then try to get the place toddler-friendly beforehand. If Christmas lunch is served during their mealtime then try to get them used to an earlier feeding time before Christmas. Planning a solution to the problem rather than complaining will always keep you one step ahead of the game.

Don’t be a mummy saviour

Accept assistance from others, and if they aren’t readily available then ask for them. Don’t try to be the parent who has it all under control, because if we’re being honest, no one does, and that is okay.

If it all starts to get overwhelming, remember that Christmas is only one day. Things will return to normal after it. Try to be in the moment and cherish those festive memories and laughter. Toddlers can be amazing and joyful little people, and if given the opportunity, they can help make Christmas day as special as they are.
