Know the high risk crash hotspots around The Bluff
Being aware of crash-prone areas in the South of Durban and understanding the risks can help drivers stay alert and make safer decisions.
ROAD safety is a critical concern for everyone who travels on local roads. Understanding where crashes occur most frequently can help drivers remain alert.
Below are some known crash-prone areas around The Bluff, Montclair, Wentworth, Jacobs and surrounding areas:
- Edwin Swales Drive: This road has seen several accidents, including a fatal crash involving a light motor vehicle and a stationary truck near Bluff Road. Another incident involved a head-on collision on the Edwin Swales Bridge, resulting in fatalities.
- M4 Southern Freeway: A recent multiple-vehicle collision on the M4 near Quality Street resulted in 15 injuries. The crash involved four vehicles, including a fully laden taxi.
- Jacobs and M4 Intersection: While there aren’t specific incidents mentioned for Jacobs, it’s located near the M4, which has seen accidents.
- N3 Mariannhill toll in both directions recently saw some serious collisions.
Spokesperson for PT Alarms Dhevan Govindasamy urged drivers to exercise extra caution and follow safety tips when driving in these areas.

- Follow traffic rules: Obey speed limits and traffic signals to avoid accidents.
- Maintain your vehicle: Ensure your vehicle is in good condition to prevent mechanical failures that could lead to accidents.
- Avoid distractions: Keep your eyes on the road and avoid distractions like using your phone while driving.
Govindasamy added, “By being aware of these hotspots and taking necessary precautions, you can reduce your risk of being involved in an accident. Stay safe on the roads. Alcohol consumption and driving should never be combined. Higginson Highway is another accident-prone area to try and avoid.”
