The heat coursing through Durban can make things uncomfortable and even dangerous. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions against the heat to ensure their safety.

Tips to handle the heatwave:

Garrith Jamieson, a spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, gives the following tips to manage today’s heatwave effectively.

  • Keep hydrated – Drink plenty of cold water and consume foods that contain a lot of water. Avoid alcohol and hot drinks because these will further dehydrate you.
  • Dress lightly – Loose-fitting, breathable clothing can keep the body cool.
  • Cool down – Take a cool dip in a pool or a refreshing shower to cool off.
  • Ventilate – Keep windows open to maintain airflow through your residence.
  • Limit sun exposure – If possible, minimise going outdoors, especially during peak sun hours.
  • Be responsible – Never leave children or pets alone in a vehicle, not even for a minute.
  • Avoid strenuous activities – Put off strenuous work until the cooler part of the day.

Jamieson said the risks of heat-related illnesses can increase if one is not careful.
