Green mamba captured on New Year’s Day on The Bluff

The Bluff-based snake catcher was called out on New Year's Day to retrieve a green mamba from the backyard of a home on The Bluff.

THE Bluff-based snake catcher, Warren Dick, kicked off the year doing what he does best, capturing and releasing slithery snakes. Dick was called out to remove a green mamba that was found in the backyard of a Marine Drive home on January 1.

Dick said he received a call from a couple who were enjoying some animal watching in their garden before they noticed the monkeys and birds acting peculiarly.

“The monkeys started acting strangely in the trees, causing quite a commotion. The couple soon spotted the reason for the stir, the green mamba,” said Dick.

By the time the snake enthusiast arrived nature took its course as the monkeys drove the green mamba further down the tree to the lowest, outermost branch of the tree, leaving it with no way to escape.

“They actually made my job quite easy. The monkeys were sitting nearby, almost as if they knew I was coming to catch the snake. They made a lot of noise while I was taking it out of the tree,” joked Dick.

The green mamba was estimated to be around 1.5m long, a significant size for one of South Africa’s most feared and fast-moving snakes.

“My first catch of the new year is also my favourite snake species, the green mamba. It was a great start to 2026,” said Dick.
