This programme helps those who did not achieve their National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate. It gives them a chance to rewrite or add subjects for free, as long as it fits with the department’s rules for the May/June exams.
The initiative forms part of the broader objectives of the National Development Plan, with a focus on improving learner retention and increasing opportunities for further education and training. Apart from completing their matric, learners in the programme will also be exposed to bursary opportunities to further their studies.
The department says it does not support or condone any private services that charge for the Second Chance Programme. They suggest people get info directly from the Department of Basic Education or through its website.
Eligibility requirements:
- Learners who have registered to write their Senior Certificate examinations in June.
- Learners who have tried the NSC exams after 2008 and are registered to write their examinations in May/June or November.
Some of the subjects you can get help with are accounting, agricultural sciences, business studies, economics, English first additional language, geography, history, mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical sciences and life sciences.
For more information about the programme, you can contact the department of education by sending an email to [email protected], contacting them on 063 696 7246 for enquiries or sending them a WhatsApp on 061 505 3023 for subject-related queries.
