The competition in August at Cape Town’s Artscape Opera House stands as Africa’s largest ballet competition, drawing aspiring dancers from across the globe. Judged by a panel of distinguished international experts, Gabriella-Love’s qualification for this platform underscores the remarkable nature of her accomplishment.
Journey to the international stage
Her mother, Laurene Harrison, fondly remembers the early days when Gabriella-Love’s affection for ballet started to take shape.
“She started at age three after showing a love for movement and music. We enrolled her at a studio and from the beginning it was evident that ballet was special to her. What started as an activity, quickly became a passion and she’s been dedicated ever since. She now dances for the South African Ballet Academy on The Bluff,” said Harrison.
The path to the SAIBC was marked by hard work and determination, which led to Gabriella-Love delivering a standout performance at the Durban regional qualifiers on February 14. Harrison said that it was a special moment for Gabriella-Love who was overjoyed and grateful with the response she received.
For the love of the dance
For Gabriella-Love, ballet transcends the usual goals of trophies or public acclaim. It represents a source of genuine happiness and personal fulfilment. “Ballet makes me feel joyful. I love dancing because it makes me feel like I am doing what I was created to do. To dance for His glory. Ballet makes me feel confident, I enjoy learning new steps and improving every lesson,” said Gabriella-Love.
As the competition approaches, Gabriella-Love’s objectives remain clear, to perform her best. She also seeks to grow and learn as a dancer and to simply enjoy her performance.
Investing in a dream
Along with this exciting opportunity, the family faces practical financial challenges, primarily related to travel and accommodation expenses. To help alleviate this, they are calling on the community to help invest in Gabriella-Love’s dreams. If you can contribute, contact Laurene Harrison on 065 821 1797.
