Historical Clairwood church celebrates 85 years

The Horeb Temple church in Clairwood celebrates its 85th anniversary of spreading the word of God in the community.

HOREB Temple, a Full Gospel Church of God, is preparing to observe its 85th anniversary. The church, established on January 1, 1941, has been a central part of the spiritual lives for many in the Durban South community. Located in Clairwood, it is recognised as a historical site and is closely connected to the area’s Indian heritage.

Founding leaders

The church was founded by the late Pastor John Francis Rowlands, who was a key figure in evangelism and spiritual renewal in Durban under the Bethesda Land ministries. His work established a foundation for Horeb Temple.

Today, presiding Pastor George Ankadu leads the church and marks 32 years of service there. Known for his straightforward and faithful teaching of religious texts, Ankadu has guided the expansion of the church’s facilities, which now include an administrative office, a hall with a kitchen and renovated restrooms.

Spreading the gospel

Throughout its history, Horeb Temple has been a starting point for many ministers, such as Pastors Joseph Vallen, George Ellapa, Cyril Geoffrey, Virginia John, Dennis John, Leslie Peters and Anderson Jayaramen. The church has also supported the development of local musicians and songwriters.

While Horeb Temple has grown and modernised, it maintains elements of its original structure. The sanctuary still has the hand-carved communion table from 1941, marked with “H.T.”, along with original stained-glass doors and wooden pews.

Special banquet

To celebrate the 85th anniversary, Horeb Temple will hold a banquet in October. The church has invited business partners, other religious groups, community organisations, and former members to attend. Those wishing to contribute can make financial donations, purchase advertising in a commemorative brochure or include personal messages. Tickets for the banquet are R585 per person, with tables of 10 available for R5 500.

Recovering memories

The church is also seeking old photographs, historical items, or personal stories related to Horeb Temple to help preserve its history. For details about participating in the anniversary events contact Chris Kuppusamy on 072 268 2691.
