Clairwood residents take action to repair roads

Clairwood residents said the recent intervention by Durban Solid Waste to unblock drains failed to resolve deeper infrastructure issues.

RESIDENTS in Clairwood rolled up their sleeves on May 8 to repair potholes and clear blocked drains as part of a community-led initiative aimed at improving deteriorating road conditions in the area.

The initiative was driven by growing frustration among residents who said repeated calls had been made to eThekwini Municipality for intervention, however, all went unanswered.

A community member, Haseena Hoosen, said residents were compelled to act after limited intervention from authorities, including work by Durban Solid Waste to unblock some sewer drains, failed to resolve deeper infrastructure issues.

Hoosen said that temporary measures such as filling potholes with sand were necessary ahead of a major religious festival, when large numbers of devotees were expected to use the roads.

“Clairwood is a forgotten suburb because all our pleas for better service delivery have gone unnoticed,” Hoosen said.

She also highlighted long-standing concerns over infrastructure neglect.

Joining the clean-up effort were Shamshudeen Shaik, Leon Pillay, Ismael Sayed, Musa Majad and George Friday, who assisted in patching roads and clearing drainage channels across affected streets.

The voluntary effort also drew attention from passing motorists, many of whom expressed support for the initiative as vehicles slowed to navigate uneven road surfaces and partially repaired sections of the roadway.
